frequently asked questions

the journal

Q: What kinds of art supplies can be used in this journal?
A: The paper inside the journals is a very thick, smooth, bright white luxury paper. We’ve tested the paper with the following mediums and found there was little or no bleeding or warping:
           • Crayons
           • Pencils
           • Washable markers
           • Ballpoint pens
           • Gel pens
           • Stamping ink
           • Stickers (not 3D)
           • Chunkies paint sticks

We recommend avoiding the use of Sharpies and wet paints as it may bleed through the pages and make the pages warp. 3D art and crafts items like glitter, puffy glue, and sequins may be used, but be advised that your journal may not close flat.

Q: How much blank drawing space is on each journal entry spread?
A: Each spread has a little over 12 x 6 " worth of blank space for drawing, coloring, and creating!

Q: What if I have a large family?
A: The beauty of our journals is that they are fully adaptable to your family size and situation. You decide how to use it and tailor it to your specific needs. The journal contains 90 spreads. You can use the formula below to calculate how many years the journal will last your family:

90 / (# of children  X  # of times it will be used per year) = how many years it will last you

If your family has 2 children or less, one journal will probably provide plenty of pages. For larger families, one option is to create chronological “volumes” and purchase a second journal after you complete the first one. Alternatively, you could purchase one journal per child.

Q: What if I am a single parent? Is the journal still for me?
Absolutely! You don’t need a spouse in order to use this journal. If your children are older, they will be able to use the journal independently (though a reminder that a special occasion is coming up wouldn’t hurt!) If your children are younger, ask a friend or family member to help them fill out the pages.
Q: What if my children are young?
We believe there is nothing sweeter than looking back on tiny handprints and a baby’s first scribbles. To help you use your journal, we have prompts listed in the back of the journal for every age group. If your children are young, all they may be able to do is stamp a hand, or do a quick scribble. In addition to the creative prompts, you can also use the writing prompts to ask your children questions and record their answers for them if they can’t write yet.

Q: What if my children are older?
A: If your children are older, we want you to know that it is never too late to start a journal with them! You can start creating special family traditions now, no matter the age of your children. As your children grow into adulthood, they may be less interested in making artistic entries. The blank space can be used for writing messages instead.

Q: What if my children aren’t motivated to fill out the journal?
Although we think most children will love participating, we know some children may need a little encouragement to fill out a page in the journal. To help you out, we have included 4 Progress Tracker pages in the back. There is a line to write your child's name at the top of each page if you wish. Each page contains 30 spots for stickers or stamps. After your child completes a page, let them put a stamp or a sticker (or 3, we won’t tell!) on their Progress Tracker page. As the years go by, they’ll be able to see their progress through all the stickers they’ve received in the past.

Q: What if my spouse isn’t creative?
We know not all spouses are creative, and that’s ok! While there are definitely opportunities for your spouse to get creative with the journal, they won’t need to do anything creative if they don't want to. All they need to do is get out the journal (and some art supplies if desired), and then help your children pick a prompt if they aren’t sure what to use their page for. That’s it! Zero creativity required.

Q: What if I want to index all the journal entries?
Each spread has a page number in the bottom right hand corner. If you’d like to create an index or table of contents so that you can easily reference specific dates or occasions, we have provided 4 lined “Notes” pages in the back for this purpose.

Q: Can this journal be used for Fathers, or between couples with no children?
A: The journal has been designed with Mothers in mind, but could still be used for Fathers or even couples with no children. That said, we do plan to expand our product line to include a journal specifically for Fathers, so stay tuned!

pre-ordering & kickstarter

Q: How do I order a journal?
We are offering our journals at a discounted rate when you pre-order during our Kickstarter campaign. There are different tiers of pledge amounts, but with most pledges you will receive a journal!

Q: How does the payment process work?
A: You will be required to give payment details at the time of pre-ordering, but you will only be charged if our Kickstarter reaches its funding goal. The payment process is handled entirely through the Kickstarter platform so it is secure. Your payment details will not be shared with us or anyone else.

Q: Why are you doing pre-orders through a Kickstarter campaign?
While we have invested a significant amount of our own money into Preserve Journals in order to get this far, we are committed to running a debt-free business. We do not wish to take on investors, nor take out a business loan. In order to see if our idea is viable and if there is enough interest in the market for our journals, we determined that funding our first large order through a crowd-sourcing platform was the wisest way forward. We chose Kickstarter because we like its emphasis on supporting creative ventures like ours.

Q: What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative ideas that are brought to life through the direct support of others.

Q: Am I giving your company a donation? Am I an investor?
A: There are different tiers of pledges, but with most of the pledge amounts you are receiving a product in exchange for a pledge. With most of the pledge tiers, you are not giving us a donation, nor are you an investor. You are simply pre-ordering a product, similar to pre-ordering a book on Amazon.

Q: What are the pledge levels? I'd like more information about how the Kickstarter will work!
More information about the Kickstarter process will be available on the Kickstarter page when it goes live!

Q: What happens after the Kickstarter is over?
Once the campaign is over and we have hit our funding goal, we will receive funds from Kickstarter. Then we’ll be placing our first large order with our manufacturer. As a Kickstarter backer and loyal supporter of Preserve Journals, you’ll be the first to receive a journal once we receive our inventory and they ship out! After all the Kickstarter rewards have been sent out, we will open up our website for journal sales at a regular retail price.
